Vegetables food myths
One myth is that fresh vegetables are better than the frozen ones. In fact, some studies have actually shown that sometimes you can get more nutrition from frozen vegetables. This is because fresh produce starts to ripen and lose nutrients as soon as it is picked. Frozen vegetables are able to hold in more of their nutrients because when they freeze the nutrients are locked in.
Another myth that many people may believe is that cooked vegetables are less nutritious than the raw ones. This however, really depends on what type of vegetable it is. Cooking can get rid of some nutrients but it can also bring out others. Cooking can destroy vitamin C which is why it is not recommended to cook oranges. Another myth is that iceberg lettuce does not have any nutritional value. It is mostly water, but it does contain protein, fiber, and some vitamins and minerals. It is however true, that other darker green vegetables hold more nutritional value. Finally, local vegetables are not always cheaper because sometimes the store has to get their produce from other places so it costs more for them and then in turn costs more for you, the customer.
It may not matter how long you have been told something, it may still be a myth, so it is important to check your facts and do your own research. This information can help you figure out which vegetables are best and that way you can get more vegetables in your diet and be healthier now and in the future.
